Québec Native Women: TransCanada Announcement Cancellation of Energy East project

Kahnawake, October 6 2017 – Québec Native Women is greatly pleased with the decision by TransCanada to abandon the Energy East pipeline project. We are especially relieved that this project hasn’t come to fruition, considering that important parts of the project would have been constructed on indigenous territory, near communities and essential bodies of water.

In response to TransCanada, who justify their cancellation of the Energy East project by arguing that the rules imposed by the National Energy Board are too strict, QNW maintains that when it comes to the environment, regulations should not be more lax. The negative impacts of such a project are considerable, not only for First Nations in Québec, but also for the province’s population in general.

Although the cancellation of the Energy East pipeline project is excellent news, QNW remains vigilant. Other pipeline projects, such as Kinder Morgan in British Columbia, and the Keystone XL pipeline, are still currently under development. QNW continues to uphold the idea that the development of such projects on indigenous territory entails high risks for the environment and for bodies of water, and cannot be done without the prior consent of First Nations in Canada.

Kahnawake, 6 octobre 2017 – Femmes Autochtones du Québec se réjouit de la décision prise par TransCanada d’abandonner le projet de pipeline Énergie Est. Nous sommes particulièrement soulagées que sa réalisation n’ait pas vu le jour, considérant que d’importantes parties du projet auraient été construites sur des territoires autochtones, près de communautés et de cours d’eau essentiels.

En réponse à TransCanada, qui explique que l’abandon du projet Énergie Est est dû à la réglementation trop stricte de l’Office Nationale de l’Énergie, FAQ soutient qu’il ne peut y avoir de relâchement en matière de réglementations lorsqu’il est question d’environnement. Les impacts négatifs d’un tel projet sont considérables, non seulement sur les Premières Nations du Québec, mais aussi sur l’ensemble de la population québécoise.

Bien que l’abandon du projet de pipeline Énergie Est soit une excellente nouvelle, FAQ demeure vigilante. D’autres projets de pipeline, tels que le projet Kinder Morgan en Colombie-Britannique et l’oléoduc Keystone XL, sont toujours en court de développement. FAQ continue de soutenir que le développement de tels projets sur les territoires autochtones comporte de hauts risques pour l’environnement et pour les cours d’eau, et ne peut se faire sans le consentement préalable, libre et éclairé des Premières Nations du Canada.
