SK Government: More Than 11,000 New Jobs Created Year-Over-Year

According to the most recent Statistics Canada data, Saskatchewan’s unemployment rate is down from last year and from last month.

In October 2019, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 5.1 per cent, down from 6.1 per cent in October 2018 and down from 5.3 per cent in September 2019.  The national average was 5.5 per cent.

October marks Saskatchewan’s 15th consecutive month of job growth, with year-over-year employment rising by 11,100 jobs, an increase of 1.9 per cent.  Female employment increased by 5,700 (+2.2 per cent) and off-reserve Aboriginal employment increased by 4,400 (+9.5 per cent).

“Saskatchewan continues to experience one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country and below the national average, despite external headwinds,” Immigration and Career Training Minister Jeremy Harrison said.  “Our government is committed to ensuring Saskatchewan remains the best place in Canada to live, work and raise a family.  A growing Saskatchewan is a strong Saskatchewan.”

Record highs were set for the month of October in the following categories:

• Labour force: 613,100
• Employment: 586,300
• Female employment: 268,900
• Male employment: 317,400

Other October highlights:

• Aboriginal youth employment was up 1,500 jobs (+17.9 per cent);
• Regina’s employment was up 2,800 jobs (+2.0 per cent), and Saskatoon’s employment was up 6,100 jobs (+3.4 per cent) compared to last October; and
• Major year-over-year gains were reported for other services (except public administration) up 5,600 jobs, agriculture up 3,600 jobs and manufacturing up 3,000 jobs.
