Press Release
Sep 8, 2025
Minister of Education Jeanie McLean has issued the following statement:
“On September 8 we mark International Literacy Day, a UNESCO-declared day to celebrate the power of literacy to transform lives and strengthen communities. Literacy is more than reading and writing – it is the foundation of lifelong learning, opportunity and participation in society.
“This day is an opportunity to recognize the incredible work being done by teachers, families and partners across the Yukon. I want to thank the Yukon First Nation School Board, the Commission scolaire francophone du Yukon and the Yukon Education Authority for their ongoing efforts and commitment to helping every student build strong literacy skills. Together, we are dedicated to ensuring that all Yukon learners have the tools they need to succeed.
“At the same time, International Literacy Day reminds us that there is more work to do. We must continue to improve outcomes, particularly for rural students and Yukon First Nations students. We are encouraged by the gradual improvements seen for Grade 4 students in recent years, which are a sign that the literacy plans in place across all school authorities are starting to make a difference. However, results for Grade 7 require continued support. This reflects the challenges that this cohort faced during the COVID-19 pandemic, when they lost class time at a crucial stage in their foundational learning.
“Improving literacy is a shared responsibility and I am proud of the strong partnerships we are building with educators, families and Yukon First Nations across all three school authorities. By working together and ensuring that supports are responsive and culturally grounded, we can give every student the opportunity to thrive. On this International Literacy Day, let us celebrate the progress we have made, acknowledge the work still ahead and reaffirm our commitment to making literacy a cornerstone of success for all Yukon learners.”
