The Ring of Fire project does not depend on the Anishinabek giving ‘free, prior and informed consent,’ lawyer says

The Anishinabek have no “inherent rights.” No one does. There are only legal rights in Canada, which only the Canadian state can create and enforce.

The Ring of Fire project does not depend on the Anishinabek giving their “free, prior and informed consent.” UNDRIP is not Ontario law, and does not apply to Ontario projects such as the Ring of Fire.

The Ring of Fire is in the James Bay region. The Anishinabek are Great Lakes First Nations. Thus, the Ring of Fire is not in their “ancestral”, “traditional” or treaty lands. Accordingly, they have no say in or right to “partner” in the Ring of Fire.
