Ontario Creating Jobs, Strengthening Northern Economy

Ontario is helping to build a stronger, more diverse northern economy while creating jobs in the Algoma-Manitoulin area.
With $4.3 million in support from the province’s Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC), seven projects in the Algoma-Manitoulin region are boosting the regional economy, and creating or retaining 64 jobs. Projects include:
- Four Manitoulin area First Nations are receiving a total of $1 million to build a hotel and conference centre in Little Current, creating 12 jobs.
- J. Provost Contracting in Wawa is receiving $1 million to expand the construction company, creating 10 jobs.
- Batchewana Band Industries is receiving $897,450 to expand the Blue Heron Industrial Park, creating five jobs.
- The Municipality of Killarney is receiving $500,000 to upgrade its wharf facility and support the expansion of a fish plant and restaurant, retaining 20 jobs.
- Aundeck Omni Kaning First Nation is receiving $500,000 to build a multi-purpose centre, creating one job.
- Batchewana First Nation is receiving $439,235 to build a convention and retail centre, creating six jobs.
- The Town of Gore Bay is receiving $45,000 to complete upgrades to its Wharf Centre, including eight new studio spaces, creating 10 jobs.
Supporting business expansion and community development is part of the government’s economic plan that is creating jobs for today and tomorrow. The comprehensive plan and its six priorities focus on Ontario’s greatest strengths — its people and strategic partnerships.

Since 2003, the NOHFC has invested $930 million in 6,055 projects in Northern Ontario, creating or sustaining more than 23,400 jobs.
In the Algoma-Manitoulin region since 2003, the NOHFC has invested $85 million in 607 projects, creating or sustaining more than 1,480 jobs.
