Ontario Creating Jobs, Strengthening Northern Economy

Ontario is helping to build a stronger, more diverse northern economy while creating jobs in the Kenora-Rainy River area.

With $5.1 million in support from the province’s Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC), eight projects in the Kenora-Rainy River region are boosting the regional economy, and creating more than 96 new jobs. Projects include:

The City of Kenora is receiving $2 million to complete Phase 3 of its downtown revitalization project, creating 78 jobs.
The Town of Emo is receiving $1 million to install a new water main to service commercial lots in the east end.
The Seine River First Nation is receiving $1 million to construct a multi-purpose centre, creating seven jobs.
Mitaanjigaming First Nation is receiving $569,458 to upgrade an access road for a quarry development project and $280,164 to build its multi-use centre.
Sachigo Lake First Nation is receiving $150,073 to develop its business centre, creating six jobs.
The Township of Lake of the Woods is receiving $125,939 to install a geothermal heating system at the Bergland Hall.
Saulteaux Consulting in Fort Frances is receiving $44,535 to expand the engineering business, creating three jobs.

Supporting business expansion and community development is part of the government’s economic plan that is creating jobs for today and tomorrow. The comprehensive plan and its six priorities focus on Ontario’s greatest strengths — its people and strategic partnerships.

Since 2003, the NOHFC has invested $930 million in 6,055 projects in Northern Ontario, creating or sustaining more than 23,400 jobs.
In Kenora-Rainy River region since 2003, the NOHFC has invested $97.4 million in 479 projects, creating or sustaining more than 2,600 jobs.
