Saskatchewan’s Muskowekwan First Nation is in negotiations with the government of India to sell potash to India, one step in an effort to secure financing for the aboriginal group’s potash project.
The Muskowekwan First Nation is trying to become the only reserve in Canada to have an on-site potash mine – to be located near Punnichy – that should create about 1,000 jobs during its construction and generate 500 long-term jobs once the mine is fully operational.
The Muskowekwan has a population of 1,700 members with 1,000 living off-reservation. The First Nation is located on 25,000 hectares in the southeastern part of Saskatchewan where PotashCorp and Mosaic are already operating mines. The Muskowekwan potash project encompasses 17, 401 hectares (43,000 acres).
