SYTYKM Early Bird Entries Qualify for Extra Cash Prize

Press Release

The annual So You Think You Know Mining video competition is already proving a hit, with 39 early bird entries submitted by high school students eager to qualify for an extra $500 draw. SYTYKM, which sets out to uncover the next generation of talented video storytellers, offers a prize pool valued at $45,000.

Missed the January 28 early bird deadline? Not to worry – you have until midnight on April 4, 2016 to submit your video. To vie for the top $5,000 prize and/or one of the $2,500 prizes in eleven additional prize categories, your task is to produce an engaging and original video clip that profiles the benefits of mining to society. This year, there are also five honourable mentions worth $500 each, as well as $500 bonus prizes and significant cash incentives for participating teachers and schools. Full competition details, technical requirements for submitting videos, production ideas, tips from the judging panel, past winners’ entries, and videos documenting award ceremonies are available on the SYTYKM website.

This being the eighth year of competition, entrants are encouraged less conventional and a more journalistic approach: we’re looking for attention-grabbing, thought-provoking, innovative mini-documentaries that highlight themes such as safety, environment, community development, next-generation technologies, energy solutions, the low carbon economy and its link to mining, among other possibilities. The SYTYKM judging panel, comprising media and mining professionals, is ultimately seeking the perfect marriage of inspiration and realization.

The best storytellers will get to walk down the red carpet at the awards gala on June 1, 2016 at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto to accept Oscar-style trophies – and cheques. View photos and video highlights from last year’s ceremony.
