Industrial capacity utilization rates, third quarter 2017
Canadian industries operated at 85.0% of their production capacity in the third quarter, up from 84.3% the previous quarter. This was the fifth consecutive quarterly increase.
Energy research and development expenditures by area of technology, 2015 (actual)
In 2015, $1.6 billion of in-house research and development expenditures in Canada were directed to energy-related technologies.
Research and development in Canadian industry: Intellectual property, 2015 (actual)
Businesses in Canada with current or previous research and development (R&D) expenditures continued to be net exporters of intellectual property (IP) products and technological services in 2015, with $1.0 billion in net outflows. These businesses with R&D activities purchased $857 million of IP and technological services from other organizations outside of Canada. They received $1.9 billion in payments from purchasers outside Canada for their IP or provision of technological services, which contributed to the country’s outward flow of knowledge.
Architectural, Engineering and Related Services Price Index, third quarter 2017
The Architectural, Engineering and Related Services Price Index (AESPI) rose 0.2% in the third quarter, following a 0.4% increase in the second quarter.
Newspaper publishers, 2016
The newspaper publishing industry reported $3.2 billion in operating revenue in 2016, down 19.8% from 2014. Operating expenses declined 16.6% to $3.0 billion in 2016. The decreases in operating revenue and operating expenses were widespread, with Ontario and the Western provinces and territories showing more of a decline than the Eastern provinces.
Dangerous goods incidents in Canada, 2016
There were 290 incidents involving dangerous goods that required a report to Transport Canada in 2016, down 13.2% from 2015 and about 74 fewer than the 10-year annual average (364.2) of reportable incidents.
Quarterly civil aviation statistics, second quarter 2017
The number of air carriers increased from 24 in 2016 to 26 in 2017, as two Level III air carriers were promoted to Level II. Total operating revenue for the 26 largest Canadian air carriers increased 10.6% from the second quarter of 2016 to $5.8 billion in the second quarter of 2017. Total operating expenses grew 9.2% to $5.3 billion.
Aircraft movement statistics: Small airports, August 2017
Take-offs and landings at 126 Canadian airports without air traffic control towers reached 74,765 movements in August.
Investment in non-residential building construction (revised data), third quarter 2017
Following the release of gross domestic product by income and expenditure for the third quarter, revised data on investment in non-residential building construction for the third quarter are now available.
Sawmills, September 2017
Lumber production rose 1.4% from August to 5 633.4 thousand cubic metres of lumber in September. Production was 4.8% lower than in September 2016.
