Retail trade, December 2019
Retail sales were virtually unchanged at $51.6 billion in December, after growing 1.1% in November. Higher sales at building material and garden equipment and supplies dealers, as well as food and beverage stores were more than offset by lower sales at motor vehicle and parts dealers and gasoline stations.
Travel between Canada and other countries, December 2019
Canada received a record 22.1 million international tourists from abroad in 2019, surpassing the previous year’s record of 21.1 million. This marked the sixth consecutive year of increased tourist arrivals to Canada, with growth in tourist arrivals from both the United States and overseas.

Food services and drinking places, December 2019
On a seasonally adjusted basis, sales in the food services and drinking places subsector edged up 0.1% to $6.3 billion in December. Higher sales were reported in full-service restaurants (+0.4%), limited-service eating places (+0.3%) and drinking places (+0.5%). Sales declined in special food services (-3.2%) following two consecutive month-over-month increases.
Consulting services, 2018
The management, scientific and technical consulting services industry group reported $21.2 billion in operating revenue in 2018, up 3.6% from the previous year. Growth has eased compared with the 4.2% increase in 2017. This industry group offers consulting services in various sectors, such as human resources, information technology, science and economics, management, and the environment. Operating expenses grew 3.5% to $15.0 billion in 2018, resulting in an operating profit margin of 29.1%.
