Railway carloadings, April 2020

Canadian railways carried 30.0 million tonnes of freight in April, down 10.0% from April 2019. This was the largest year-over-year decrease in five years, excluding the November 2019 rail strike. This is also the first monthly decline in freight that was linked to the activity shutdown in several sectors due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The total amount of milk sold off farms decreased 3.1% year over year to 743 120 kilolitres in April. Meanwhile, milk sold off farms for fluid purposes increased 1.1% to 232 935 kilolitres. Milk sold off farms for industrial purposes decreased 4.8% year over year to 510 185 kilolitres.
