Canadian international merchandise trade, January 2021
Canada posted a trade surplus of $1.4 billion in January, the first since May 2019, owing to a sharp 8.1% increase in merchandise exports. Imports rose 0.9% in January compared with the previous month.
Canadian Survey on Business Conditions, first quarter 2021
Over the period from January 11 to February 11, 2021, over two-fifths of businesses expected their profitability to decrease and close to one-third expected sales to fall over the following three months. Nevertheless, nearly three-quarters of businesses expected their number of employees to remain the same.

Canada’s monthly international trade in services deficit widened from $33 million in December 2020 to $236 million in January 2021. Overall, imports of services increased 2.7% to $9.5 billion, and exports were up 0.5% to $9.3 billion.
