Trade by exporter characteristics: Goods, 2017
The number of Canadian enterprises exporting goods abroad rose by 191 firms in 2017 to 43,480. This change mainly reflected an increase in the number of exporting enterprises in the manufacturing sector. That strength was largely offset by a decline in the retail trade sector.
Trade by importer characteristics: Goods, 2017
In 2017, 154,225 enterprises in Canada imported goods from abroad, up 5,339 from 2016. The growth was widespread among every sector of the economy.
Food services and drinking places, March 2018
Sales in the food services and drinking places subsector were up 1.3% to $6.0 billion in March. Higher sales at limited-service (+1.5%) and full-service (+1.1%) restaurants accounted for most of the gain. Sales increases were also reported in the special food services industry group (+1.5%) and drinking places (+0.8%).
Dairy statistics, March 2018
The volume of yogurt produced in March was 32 378 tonnes, down 7.3% from March 2017. Production of cottage cheese decreased 3.9% from the same month a year earlier to 1 896 tonnes in March 2018, while cheddar cheese production increased 15.3% over the same period to 14 353 tonnes.
Machinery and Equipment Price Index, first quarter 2018
The Machinery and Equipment Price Index (MEPI) decreased 0.2% in the first quarter, following a 1.6% increase in the fourth quarter of 2017. The import component was down 0.3% while the domestic component increased 0.1%.
