Consumer Price Index, September 2018

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 2.2% year over year in September, following a 2.8% increase in August. On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, the CPI was down 0.1% in September, after rising 0.1% in August.

Retail trade, August 2018

Retail sales declined 0.1% to $50.8 billion in August, following a 0.2% increase in July. Sales were down in 7 of 11 subsectors in August, representing 52% of retail trade.

Pipeline transportation of oil and other liquid petroleum products, August 2018

The amount of crude oil that pipelines received from Canadian fields and plants remained stable at 22.3 million cubic metres in August compared with the same month a year earlier. The vast majority originated in Alberta (87.3%) followed by Saskatchewan (10.0%).

Canada’s import duties, 1988 to 2018

Like most countries, Canada collects duties on specific goods imported into the economy. Over the past 30 years, the value of Canada’s imports from the world increased fourfold. Meanwhile, duties collected on imports declined from 3.7% of Canada’s total import value in 1988 to 1.0% in 2017.
