Consumer Price Index, August 2018

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 2.8% on a year-over-year basis in August, following a 3.0% increase in July. On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, the CPI was up 0.1% in August, after increasing 0.5% in July.

Retail trade, July 2018

Retail sales rose 0.3% to $50.9 billion in July on higher sales at food and beverage stores and gasoline stations. Excluding the lower sales at motor vehicle and parts dealers, retail sales increased 0.9%.

Travel between Canada and other countries, July 2018

US residents made 2.0 million trips to Canada in July, down 1.4% from June. However, after adjusting for normal seasonal variation, July’s total was close to the monthly average for 2018.

Estimating the demand for cannabis, fourth quarter 2018

Cannabis products will become legal for recreational purposes on October 17, 2018. In anticipation of this change, Statistics Canada has estimated how large the cannabis market may be in the fourth quarter. The estimates are derived using census population data and statistics from the National Cannabis Survey.
