Intimate partner violence in Canada, 2018

In 2018, 44% of women—who had ever been in an intimate partner relationship—reported experiencing some form of psychological, physical, or sexual violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime. By comparison, this was the case for just over one-third (36%) of men.

Monthly estimates of business openings and closures, January 2021

In January, despite extended public health restrictions in many provinces, the number of business closures decreased by 1.3% since the previous month. The number of business openings was down 6.9% and has been steadily declining since its 2020 peak in June. Despite this decrease in business openings, the number of active businesses continued to edge up slightly in January, but was 2.2% lower than one year earlier.

Railway carloadings, February 2021

In February, Canadian railways carried 27.2 million tonnes of freight, up 1.0% from February 2020. This marked the fourth consecutive year-over-year monthly increase in tonnage.

Food services and drinking places, February 2021

On a seasonally adjusted basis, sales in the food service and drinking places subsector increased by 6.7% to $4.4 billion in February. Sales rose at full-service restaurants (+17.0%) and drinking places (+39.9%), as several provinces eased lockdowns and other COVID-19-related restrictions that were in place the previous month.

Greenhouse, sod and nursery industries, 2020

It was a year of challenges for the greenhouse, nursery, field-cut flowers and sod industries in 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. These challenges ranged from uncertainty about opening during the first lockdown to the possibility of labour shortages in the wake of travel restrictions to slow the spread of COVID-19. Nevertheless, sales rose at their fastest pace since 2012, up 9.0% to $4.4 billion in 2020, as operators successfully adapted to the pandemic by offering online shopping, u-pick, curbside pick-up and home delivery, as well as physically distanced on-site sales.
