Canada’s balance of international payments, second quarter 2021

Canada’s current account balance (on a seasonally adjusted basis) posted a $3.6 billion surplus in the second quarter, following a $1.8 billion surplus in the first quarter. In the financial account (unadjusted for seasonal variation), portfolio and direct investment both led the net lending activity to non-residents in the quarter.

Production of principal field crops, July 2021

Canadian farmers are projected to harvest more corn for grain, but less wheat, canola, soybeans, barley and oats, according to recent yield models using satellite imagery. Lower production has been driven by ongoing drought conditions in Western Canada, which could decrease yields.

Poultry and egg statistics, August 2021

Data on stocks of frozen eggs and poultry meats, as well as edible dried egg products, are now available for August. Data on the placements of hatchery chicks and turkey poults are available for July, and data on egg production are available for June.

Monthly estimates of business openings and closures, May 2021

There were slightly fewer active businesses (-0.1%; -1,208) in May compared with a month earlier, marking the first time since May 2020 that the number of closures outpaced openings.

Study: Examining the labour productivity gap between women-owned and men-owned enterprises

A study published today by Statistics Canada finds that the labour productivity gap between women-owned and men-owned enterprises is partially explained by differences in prior industry experience. The study, titled “Examining the labour-productivity gap between women-owned and men-owned enterprises: The influence of prior industry experience,” uses newly developed data from 2006 to 2017 to investigate differences in enterprise-level labour productivity by gender of ownership.
