Foreign investors acquired $11.3 billion of Canadian securities in October, mainly bonds. Meanwhile, Canadian investors increased their holdings of foreign securities by $2.0 billion, also mainly in the form of bonds.

Changes in outcomes of immigrants and non-permanent residents, 2017

Immigrants admitted to Canada in 2016 reported a median entry wage of $25,900 in 2017, the highest recorded among immigrants admitted since 1981. Although the entry wages of recent immigrants have increased over the past few years, their income remains lower than that of the overall Canadian population. The Canadian Income Survey estimated the Canadian population’s median wage at $36,100 in 2017.

Study: Measuring the gig economy in Canada using administrative data

Using data from the Canadian Employer-Employee Dynamic Database and the 2016 Census of Population, a new study found that the share of gig workers among all Canadian workers aged 15 and older increased from almost 1 million workers (5.5%) in 2005 to about 1.7 million workers (8.2%) in 2016. The study was motivated by an often-expressed concern that technology and globalization are rapidly changing the nature of employment and work, and these changes manifest themselves in the growing number of individuals in non-traditional work arrangements. The study introduced a definition of gig workers in Canada based on various Canadian administrative sources, including individual and corporate tax returns.

Air fares, second quarter 2019

Base air fares in Canada, domestic and international combined, averaged $239.30 in the second quarter, up 8.1% from the same quarter in 2018, marking the second consecutive quarterly increase. This was the highest level for a second quarter since 2013, when base air fares averaged $247.10.
