Provisional death counts and excess mortality, January 2020 to September 2021

COVID-19 claimed the lives of 5,930 Canadians between the beginning of February 2021 and the beginning of September 2021. Significant excess mortality was not observed nationally during this time. Some provinces, however, did experience periods of excess mortality, generally coinciding with higher numbers of deaths due to COVID-19 over the same period.

Longitudinal Immigration Database: Immigrants’ income trajectories during the initial years since admission

Immigrants admitted to Canada in 2018 had a median wage of $31,900 in 2019, the highest recorded. For economic immigrant principal applicants, specifically, the median wage surpassed that of the Canadian population one year after admission. The wage gap between women and men decreased over time, except for economic principal applicants, as observed among those admitted in 2009.

Registered apprenticeship training programs, 2020

New apprenticeship registrations were down by over one-quarter in 2020, and certifications were down by almost one-third—the largest declines since the data series began in 1991. Female apprentices were more likely than their male counterparts to be affected by the measures to contain the spread of COVID-19.

Canadian Tourism Activity Tracker, September 2021

In September, overall tourism activity in Canada was 37.1% below the level reached in September 2019, before the pandemic. This was the fourth consecutive month of recovery since activity dipped 68.6% below the pre-pandemic level in May.

Farm Product Price Index, September 2021

The Farm Product Price Index (FPPI) increased 24.4% in September 2021 compared with the same month a year earlier, as a result of higher prices for both crops and livestock and animal products. This was the 13th consecutive year-over-year increase in the FPPI.
