Provisional death counts and excess mortality, January 2020 to October 2021
From the start of August and into the fall of 2021, the overall number of deaths in Canada rose and significant excess mortality was observed nationally. This more recent period of national excess mortality was largely driven by Alberta and British Columbia.
Medical Assistance in Dying, 2019 and 2020
Medical assistance in dying (MAID) is a sensitive and deeply personal topic. In 2016, federal legislation was introduced in Canada to allow individuals who are suffering from a serious and incurable illness, disease or disability to apply for and, if eligible, receive MAID. MAID is defined as the administration or prescription of a substance to a person that causes their death, at their request and after having met specific criteria.
Retail Commodity Survey, October 2021
Retail sales reached $59.0 billion in October, an increase of 3.6% compared with the same month a year earlier. Higher sales were reported in 10 of the 19 commodity classes.
Gender Results Framework: Data table on the gender distribution of federally appointed judges in federal, provincial and territorial courts
Statistics Canada’s Centre for Gender, Diversity and Inclusion Statistics (CGDIS) has released a new data table on the gender distribution of federally appointed judges. This information will be used by the Gender Results Framework, a whole-of-government tool designed to track gender equality in Canada.
Specialized design services, 2020
Operating revenue in the specialized design services industry fell 8.8% in 2020 to $2.9 billion. Specialized design services comprise interior, industrial, graphic and other specialized design services. In 2020, despite the need to adapt homes and workplaces and rethink how we use space, ongoing government restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic hampered in-person services, which are an important way the interior design industry conducts business.
Production and disposition of tobacco products, November 2021
Canadian manufacturers produced 1.5 billion cigarettes in November, down 2.5% from October 2021. Cigarette production was 21.3% lower compared with November 2020.
