Investment in building construction, May 2021

Investment in building construction cooled slightly in May, decreasing 1.9% to $19.4 billion. This was the first drop in seven months. Residential construction investment (-2.7%) was down for the first time since April 2020, while non-residential construction increased slightly.

Provisional death counts and excess mortality, January 2020 to April 2021

From the end of March 2020 to the beginning of April 2021, there were 5,535 more deaths than expected among Canadians aged 0 to 64 had there been no pandemic, of which 1,380 were attributed to COVID-19. This suggests that the observed excess mortality is largely related to other factors, such as deaths associated with substance use and misuse.
