Monthly estimates of business openings and closures, March 2021

In March 2021, the number of business openings increased by 1.6%, as public health restrictions were less restrictive in many provinces compared with earlier in the year. After rising steadily over the previous three months, the number of business closures edged down 0.7% in March. The number of active businesses in March was 1.3% below the level observed before the COVID-19 pandemic.

National culture indicators, first quarter 2021

Real gross domestic product (GDP) for the culture and sport sectors in Canada increased 1.3% to $13.1 billion in the first quarter of 2021, compared with 1.4% for the total economy, marking three consecutive quarters of growth. On a nominal basis, GDP for culture and sport sectors increased 1.3% to $14.6 billion. Total number of jobs supporting these sectors contracted 0.6% to just over 675,600.

Real gross domestic product (GDP) of non-profit institutions edged up 0.2% in the first quarter of 2021, after rising 2.4% in the third quarter of 2020 and 1.3% in the fourth quarter of 2020. With this increase, the sector recorded its’ highest level of GDP ever recorded since the quarterly series began in the first quarter of 2009, as non-profit institutions serving governments continued to increase throughout the pandemic. The growth of the economy-wide GDP (+1.4%) outpaced that of non-profit institutions.

Family law cases down by 7% in 2019/2020

The number of active family law cases in civil courts fell 7% in 2019/2020—the largest year-over-year drop in five years. In 2019/2020, over 228,000 family law cases seeking to dissolve a marriage or to resolve issues resulting from a family breakdown proceeded through the Canadian civil court system.

Prescription medication use among Canadian adults, 2016 to 2019

New results show that 55% of adults aged 18 to 79 used at least one prescription medication in the past month, while 36% used two or more, and 24% used three or more. The use of prescribed medication increased with age (taking one medication or more: 38% at ages 18 to 39, 56% at ages 40 to 59, and 81% at ages 60 to 79; taking three medications or more: 7% at ages 18 to 39, 22% at ages 40 to 59, and 52% at ages 60 to 79).
