Police-reported hate crime, 2019
There were 7% more police-reported hate crimes in 2019 compared with a year earlier, largely because of more incidents targeting race or ethnicity and sexual orientation. Hate crimes targeting religion were down, particularly anti-Semitic incidents.
Non-profit institutions and volunteering: Economic contribution, 2019 and first quarter to fourth quarter 2020
Real gross domestic product of non-profit institutions rose 1.3% in the fourth quarter, following a 2.4% increase in the third quarter. Increases in the second half of 2020 offset a 2.5% decline in the second quarter of 2020, as a number of non-profit institutions were mandated to temporarily suspend in-person services at that time.
Monthly estimates of business openings and closures, December 2020
In December 2020, business openings and closures were largely unchanged from November 2020. The number of business closures decreased by 0.8% while the number of business openings decreased by 1.3% (Chart 1). The number of active businesses in December continued to edge up slightly, but remained 3.6% lower than in February 2020.
Revenue for Canada’s periodical publishing industry continues to decline in 2019
The Canadian periodical publishing industry saw its operating revenue decrease to $1.2 billion in 2019, the lowest level since comparable data began to be published in 2013. While this was a 10.3% decline in operating revenue compared with 2017, it was not as pronounced as in previous years. Operating expenses (-8.4% to $1.1 billion) and salaries, wages and commissions (-9.7% to $378.5 million) recorded similar declines in 2019.
Poultry and egg statistics, March 2021
Data on stocks of frozen eggs and poultry meats, as well as edible dried egg products, are available for March. Data on the placements of hatchery chicks and turkey poults are available for February, and data on egg production are available for January.
