Survey on COVID-19 and Mental Health, February to May 2021

Findings released today from the Survey on COVID-19 and Mental Health indicate that one in four (25%) Canadians aged 18 and older screened positive for symptoms of depression, anxiety or posttraumatic stress disorder in spring 2021, up from one in five (21%) in fall 2020.

Portrait of Canadian Society: Experiences during the pandemic

This study focuses on the differential impact of the pandemic on different Canadian population groups, such as those designated as visible minorities and those born outside Canada. It finds that visible minorities and people born outside Canada see their communities as being less inclusive since the start of the pandemic and report that the pandemic has had more of an impact on their financial situation compared with other Canadians.

Monthly estimates of business openings and closures, June 2021

In June 2021, the number of business closures increased by 6.4%, following a 5.6% decline in May. The number of business openings (-1.1%) dropped for the third consecutive month.

Monthly civil aviation statistics, July 2021

Major Canadian airlines carried 2.0 million passengers on scheduled and charter services in July, the most since the pandemic began. While this was more than double the number of passengers in July 2020, it was one-quarter (25.0%) of the pre-pandemic level reported in July 2019.

Aircraft movement statistics: Major airports, July 2021

In July, there were 420,972 aircraft movements at Canada’s major airports. This increase of more than 35,000 movements from July 2020 pushed aircraft activity to its highest level in more than a year and a half. Despite this gain, total air traffic was down almost one-third (-31.5%) from July 2019, before the pandemic.

Railway carloadings, July 2021

The volume of cargo carried by Canadian railways was 28.3 million tonnes in July, down 4.0% from July 2020 levels. This marked the first notable year-over-year decline in rail volumes in eight months, when the industry emerged from the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic last fall.
