Residential mortgage activity in Canada increased on both a yearly and a quarterly basis in the second quarter. Several housing market indicators remained at record high levels relative to previous years despite showing signs of deceleration compared with the first quarter of 2021.

Study: Extensions of indicators on base erosion and profit shifting in Canada

Statistics Canada is extending on the dashboard of indicators using data from the Country-by-Country report to monitor whether multinational enterprises operating in Canada are shifting profits to lower tax countries, also known as Base Erosion and Profit Shifting. These indicators suggest that in 2016, some multinational enterprises in Canada may have shifted profits to minimize the amount of taxes they owed globally.

The Canadian federal government manages programs that offer Business Innovation and Growth Support (BIGS) through its departments and agencies. These government programs provide financial and service-based support for innovation and growth to for-profit businesses and not-for-profit organizations such as government organizations and educational institutions. The BIGS data supports program evaluation, assists with statistical analysis on the impact of innovation programs and provides a better understanding of the characteristics of the enterprises receiving support.

Government relief aid helped minimize the financial impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic in the amusement and recreation subsector, 2020

Amusement and recreation industries were impacted by restrictions put in place to limit the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. Businesses in these industries reported a combined decrease of 19.9% in their operating revenues to $9.9 billion in 2020. The gross domestic product (chained (2012) dollars) for the amusement and recreation subsector fell by 35.6% in 2020. However, government financial relief measures helped mitigate the decline in operating revenue as 56.2% of businesses surveyed indicated that they received government support.
