Consumer Price Index, November 2016
The Consumer Price Index rose 1.2% on a year-over-year basis in November, following a 1.5% increase in October. On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, the Consumer Price Index was down 0.2% in November, after increasing 0.2% in October.
For-hire Motor Carrier Freight Services Price Index, third quarter 2016
The For-hire Motor Carrier Freight Services Price Index rose 0.2% in the third quarter. This was the first increase since the second quarter of 2014.
Construction Union Wage Rate Index, November 2016
The Construction Union Wage Rate Index (including supplements) for Canada was unchanged in November compared with the previous month. The composite index increased 0.6% in the 12 months to November.
Retail trade, October 2016
Retail sales rose for the third consecutive month, rising 1.1% to $45.0 billion in October. Higher sales at gasoline stations and general merchandise stores were the main contributors to the gain.
Food services and drinking places, October 2016
Total sales for the food services and drinking places subsector edged down 0.2% to $5.5 billion in October following a 1.6% gain in September. Prices for food purchased from restaurants were up 2.6% in the 12 months to October, while prices for alcoholic beverages served in licensed establishments were 1.7% higher.
Study: The effect of the recent decline in commodity prices on the Canadian economy
The significant decline in commodity prices between the second quarter of 2014 and the first quarter of 2016 generated a real income shock roughly five times larger than the effect on real gross domestic product (GDP). The impact of the commodity price collapse is examined in two new studies.
