From 2017 to 2019, approximately one-fifth of businesses (18.2%) in Canada reported that they owned at least one type of intellectual property (IP). Farm equity in Canada rose 3.4% to $540.5 billion as of December 31, 2019. This was the smallest annual percentage increase in farm equity since 2009 as growth in land values slowed and farm debt continued to rise.

Revenue and expenses drop for Canada’s film, television and video distribution industry in 2019

In 2019, the film and video distribution industry generated total operating revenue of $1.8 billion. This was down 15.6% from 2017 as a result of the market evolving and restructuring of the industry. The industry has been experiencing a shift as it reacts to the changing ways Canadians consume film and video content. The conventional television market continued to make up the largest portion of the industry, accounting for 35.8% of revenues, followed by the theatrical market, at 29.2%. Although video-on-demand services (22.4%) made up a smaller portion of the industry, it was the only revenue stream that grew from 2017 to 2019 (+2.1%).

Food services and drinking places, December 2020

On a seasonally adjusted basis, sales in the food services and drinking places subsector fell 8.0% to $4.2 billion in December 2020. Decreased sales were reported in full-service restaurants (-18.3%), limited-service restaurants (-1.9%) and drinking places (-18.9%). Sales increased 5.5% in special food services. Lower sales were reported in seven provinces with Ontario (-9.9%) and Alberta (-16.2%) posting the largest decreases.
