Wholesale trade, December 2018
Wholesale sales rose 0.3% to $63.1 billion in December following a 1.1% decline in November. In volume terms, wholesale sales increased 0.3%.
Employment Insurance, December 2018
In December, 446,300 people received regular Employment Insurance benefits, up 4,600 or 1.0% from November.
Travel between Canada and other countries, December 2018
Canada received 21.1 million international tourists from abroad in 2018, the highest number on record and up 1.2% from the previous record of 20.9 million in 2017, the year of the country’s 150th birthday celebrations. This was the fifth consecutive year of growth for international tourist arrivals in Canada and the first year since 2015 that growth in numbers of tourists from the United States (+1.4%) outpaced the increase from overseas countries (+0.8%).
Quarterly civil aviation statistics, third quarter 2018
The number of air carriers decreased from 26 in 2017 to 25 in 2018, as one Level II air carrier was reclassified to Level IV. Total operating revenue for the 25 largest Canadian air carriers increased 8.6% from the third quarter of 2017 to $7.7 billion in the third quarter. Total operating expenses grew 16.3% to $6.7 billion, mainly driven by higher fuel prices year over year and by the increase in capacity.
Balance sheet of the agricultural sector, December 31, 2017 (revised data)
Canadian farm equity rose by $30.2 billion to $503.9 billion as of December 31, 2017, as the value of assets and liabilities increased at a similar pace—both up 6.4% from 2016.
