Activities of multinational enterprises in Canada and abroad, 2019

Within the corporate sector in 2019, multinational enterprises were responsible for nearly one-third of gross domestic product growth, for more than half of the employment increase, and for almost all of the growth in international trade. Outside Canada, sales by foreign affiliates of Canadian multinationals grew faster than sales from their domestic operations.

The most recent data from the Longitudinal Immigration Database (IMDB) indicate that factors such as participation in the Canadian education system and official language proficiency help immigrants who came to Canada as children earn wages similar to those of their Canadian-born peers during adulthood.

Research and development of Canadian private non-profit organizations, 2020 (actual), 2021 (preliminary) and 2022 (intentions)

In-house spending on research and development (R&D) declined to $167 million in 2020, from $183 million in 2019. Current in-house R&D expenditures, which accounted for the vast majority of R&D expenditures, decreased 8.5% to $161 million in 2020. Distributions of in-house spending by province and territory, field of R&D and nature of R&D did not change significantly.
