Canadian international merchandise trade, November 2025

In November, Canada’s merchandise exports fell 2.8%, while imports edged down 0.1%. As a result, Canada’s merchandise trade deficit with the world widened from $395 million in October to $2.2 billion in November.

Canada’s monthly international trade in services balance went from a surplus of $0.4 billion in October to an essentially balanced position in November (+$11 million). Overall, exports of services declined 1.5% to $19.8 billion while imports rose 0.5% to $19.8 billion.

Payroll employment, earnings and hours, and job vacancies, November 2025

The number of employees receiving pay and benefits from their employer—measured as “payroll employment” in the Survey of Employment, Payrolls and Hours—decreased by 26,200 (-0.1%) in November, following an increase of 11,900 (+0.1%) in October. On a year-over-year basis, payroll employment was up by 48,300 (+0.3%) in November.

Monthly estimates of business openings and closures, October 2025

In October, the business opening rate dropped by 0.3 percentage points to 4.5%, following a slight increase of 0.1 percentage points in the previous month. The opening rate was 0.2 percentage points below its 2015-to-2019 historical average. The decrease in the opening rate was driven by the 0.2 percentage point decline in the re-opening rate (2.9%), while the entry rate (1.7%) was relatively unchanged.
