Balance sheet of the agricultural sector, December 31, 2018

Equity in Canada’s farm sector totalled $522.2 billion on December 31, 2018, up $18.1 billion (+3.6%) from the same date a year earlier. This follows a 6.4% year-over-year increase from 2016 to 2017 and continues a slowdown in the growth of farm equity following the double-digit gains of 2012 and 2013. The slowdown in equity growth in 2018 occurred against a backdrop of sharply lower farm income (realized net farm income fell 45.1% in 2018).

Travel between Canada and other countries, April 2019

A late-season snowstorm in the first half of April affected the Prairie provinces and the upper Midwest of the United States, causing highway closures and travel delays. This reduced overnight car travel across the border, particularly the number of Canadians driving from the Prairies to the United States.

The Construction Union Wage Rate Index (CUWRI) (including supplements) for Canada increased by 0.1% in May compared with the previous month. The index for all trades (including supplements) rose 0.2% over the 12-month period ending in May.

Food services and drinking places, April 2019

On a seasonally adjusted basis, sales in the food services and drinking places subsector increased 0.3% to $6.2 billion in April 2019. Higher sales were reported in special food services (+4.2%) and limited-service restaurants (+0.1%). Sales decreased in drinking places (-1.8%) and full-service restaurants (-0.1%). Higher sales were reported in six of the provinces, with the greatest increases in dollar terms in Alberta (+1.1%), Ontario (+0.4%) and Nova Scotia (+2.2%). The largest decreases were in British Columbia (-0.1%) and Quebec (-0.1%).
