Approximately 633,000 Canadians received regular Employment Insurance benefits in January, little changed from one month earlier.
Natural resource indicators, fourth quarter 2021
Real gross domestic product (GDP) of the natural resources sector increased 0.9%, after rising 2.5% in the third quarter. In comparison, the economy-wide real GDP rose 1.6% in the fourth quarter of 2021.
Government finance statistics, fourth quarter 2021
The deficit of the Canadian general government was $9.3 billion in the fourth quarter of 2021, the smallest recorded since the fourth quarter of 2019. Following the highest deficit ever recorded ($105.7 billion in the second quarter of 2020), the deficit strongly tapered over the last few quarters. As a result, Canada’s general government quarterly deficit has receded back to the levels recorded following the 2008 financial crisis.
Aircraft movement statistics: Major airports, January 2022
In January, there were 264,879 aircraft movements at Canada’s major airports. While this was an increase of 4.6% from January 2021, it was 70.3% of the number recorded during the same month in 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic.
Monthly civil aviation statistics, January 2022
Major Canadian airlines carried 2.6 million passengers on scheduled and charter services in January. This was more than triple the number of passengers carried in January 2021, although just over one-third (37.9%) of the level reported in January 2019, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Oilseed crushing statistics, February 2022
Oilseed processors crushed 629 153 tonnes of canola in February. Oil production totalled 262 732 tonnes, while meal production totalled 377 783 tonnes.
Milled wheat and wheat flour produced, February 2022
Millers milled 265 000 tonnes of wheat in February, while wheat flour production totalled 198 000 tonnes.
