Natural resource indicators, fourth quarter 2020

Real gross domestic product (GDP) of the natural resources sector increased 4.0% in the fourth quarter, after rising 1.0% in the third quarter. Compared with 2019, the sector’s real GDP fell 7.3%, the sharpest annual decline since data were first recorded in 2007.

Nursing and residential care facilities in 2019: A look before the COVID-19 pandemic

Nursing and residential care facilities and their residents and front-line workers have been hit particularly hard by the COVID-19 pandemic. By February 2021, approximately 70% of COVID-19-related deaths had occurred in long-term care homes, and 24,000 long-term care home staff had contracted the virus. To help guide policy decisions that benefit residents and employees, Statistics Canada is currently conducting a survey on nursing and residential care facilities, in partnership with public health agencies. The survey is collecting information about key characteristics of facilities, personnel and types of care offered, as well as information on COVID-19 pandemic health issues. Estimates from this survey will be released in spring and summer 2021. In addition to this survey, Statistics Canada is using administrative files and other sources of data to publish financial estimates for the nursing and residential care facilities industry, with separate information for private and public facilities, for 2019, the latest year of available information.

Food services and drinking places, January 2021

On a seasonally adjusted basis, sales in the food service and drinking places subsector decreased for the fourth consecutive month, down 2.8% to $4.1 billion in January 2021, as lockdown restrictions remained in place in many provinces. Sales fell at full-service restaurants (-5.0%), special food services (-8.4%), limited-service restaurants (-0.6%) and drinking places (-16.7%). Half of the provinces reported decreases, with Ontario (-7.4%) and Quebec (-5.9%) recording the largest declines in dollar terms. British Columbia posted the largest increase in dollar terms (+5.5%).

Canadian manufacturers produced 1.6 billion cigarettes in February, down 1.3% from January 2021. Cigarette production was 16.7% higher compared with February 2020.
