Payroll employment, earnings and hours, March 2019

Average weekly earnings of non-farm payroll employees were $1,016 in March, up 0.8% from February following four months of little change. Compared with 12 months earlier, earnings grew by 1.9%.

Canada’s balance of international payments, first quarter 2019

Canada’s current account deficit (on a seasonally adjusted basis) widened by $0.7 billion in the first quarter of 2019 to $17.3 billion. In the financial account (unadjusted for seasonal variation), transactions in securities led the inflow of funds in the economy in the quarter.

Causes of death, 2017

Accidental deaths were the third-leading cause of death in Canada in 2017, mostly attributable to an increase in falls and drug overdoses. Overall, 276,689 people died in Canada (excluding Yukon) in 2017, with cancer and heart disease accounting for almost half of all deaths.

Changes in life expectancy by selected causes of death, 2017

Life expectancy at birth did not increase from 2016 to 2017 for either males or females, a first in over four decades. This was largely attributable to the opioid crisis.

The food available for consumption in Canada in 2018 reflected increasing consumer demand for healthier food options, leading to the greater availability of fresh fruit and poultry, and the lower availability of sugar and processed foods.

Monthly civil aviation statistics, March 2019

The six Canadian Level I air carriers flew 7.7 million passengers on scheduled and charter services in March, up 3.5% from March 2018 and continuing the upward year-over-year monthly trend that began in April 2014. This followed a 5.3% gain in February 2019 and represented the smallest increase in 11 months.

Aircraft movement statistics: Major airports, March 2019

Aircraft take-offs and landings at Canadian airports with NAVCANADA air traffic control towers and flight service stations increased 10.4% in March. Combined, 90 airports reported 506,637 movements, compared with 91 airports totalling 458,844 movements in March 2018.
