Police-reported crime increases in 2019

Police-reported crime in Canada, as measured by the Crime Severity Index (CSI), rose 5% in the year prior to the pandemic—from 75.6 in 2018 to 79.5 in 2019. This is the fifth consecutive annual increase in the CSI. Nevertheless, the 2019 index remained 9% lower than a decade earlier.

Payroll employment, earnings and hours, August 2020

The number of employees receiving pay or benefits from their employer, measured in the SEPH as payroll employment, rose by 303,200 (+2.0%) in August. This followed large increases in July (+759,500; +5.3%) and June (+665,500; +4.9%), and brought the total payroll employment change since February to a decrease of 1.6 million (-9.5%).

Aircraft movement statistics: Major airports, August 2020

The pace of recovery in aircraft movements slowed in August, even as domestic traffic (within Canada) continued to expand. Total aircraft take-offs and landings were down over one-quarter (-28.3%) from August 2019. The impact of the year-over-year decrease (-40.0%) in itinerant activity (flights from one airport to another) was mitigated by the uptick in local traffic (+2.1%), i.e., flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport.

Urban public transit, August 2020

In August, the country’s bus, train and subway operators reported 56.1 million passenger trips, continuing the steady increase observed each month since the low of 24.9 million trips in April. However, on a year-over-year basis, the number of transit passengers has remained much lower since the COVID-19 pandemic began, and August was no exception, with passenger trips down 61.6% from August 2019.
