A comprehensive portrait of police-reported crime in Canada, 2021
Police-reported violent crime rose in 2021, while non-violent crime continued to drop. These underlying shifts resulted in virtually no change to the overall Crime Severity Index (CSI) from 2020 to 2021. Although the overall CSI was little changed, increases in violent crime and incidents of hate crime provide insight into the way crime in Canada shifted following the onset of the pandemic.
