Quarterly financial statistics for enterprises, second quarter of 2021
The overall Canadian corporate sector saw a quarterly decrease in net income before taxes of 0.4%. The non-financial sector recorded a 2.0% drop in net income before taxes. The second quarter of 2021 was strongly impacted by the third wave of COVID-19, a record-setting heat wave in western Canada, and an international shortage of semiconductor chips.
Industrial research and development, 2019 (actual), 2020 (preliminary) and 2021 (intentions)
Almost 9 in 10 businesses active in research and development (R&D) reported that they did not alter their spending on R&D in 2020 from their pre-pandemic intentions; however, expenditures on in-house R&D decreased by $280 million and expenditures on outsourced R&D were down $62 million.
Dairy statistics, June 2021
The total amount of milk sold off farms in June increased 4.1% year over year to 790 513 kilolitres. Meanwhile, milk sold off farms for fluid purposes decreased 3.6% to 212 918 kilolitres. Milk sold off farms for industrial purposes rose 7.2% year over year to 577 595 kilolitres.
Oilseed crushing statistics, July 2021
Oilseed processors crushed 816 993 tonnes of canola in July. Oil production totalled 362 458 tonnes, while meal production totalled 473 390 tonnes.
Milled wheat and wheat flour produced, July 2021
Millers milled 262 385 tonnes of wheat in July, while wheat flour production totalled 203 049 tonnes.
Deliveries of major grains, July 2021
Data on major grain deliveries are now available for July.
Food services and drinking places, June 2021
On a seasonally adjusted basis, sales in the food service and drinking places subsector were up (+20.3%) in June 2021 compared with the previous month, as restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic eased throughout the country. Receipts totalled $5.4 billion, reaching their highest level since the beginning of the pandemic. Full-service restaurants (+53.2%), drinking places (+82.3%), limited-service restaurants (+2.2%) and special food services (+9.1%) all saw increased sales.
Monthly Survey of Manufacturing: Flash estimate, July 2021
Given the rapidly evolving economic situation, Statistics Canada is providing an advance estimate of sales in the manufacturing sector for July. Advance results for July indicate that manufacturing sales declined 1.2%, largely driven by lower sales in the wood product and petroleum and coal product industries.
