Gross domestic product, income and expenditure, third quarter 2020
Real gross domestic product (GDP) grew 8.9% in the third quarter, following an 11.3% drop in the second quarter and a 1.9% decline in the first. Despite strong growth in the third quarter—the steepest since quarterly data were first recorded in 1961—real GDP was down 5.3% compared with the fourth quarter of 2019.

Commercial and industrial machinery and equipment rental and leasing generated $12.6 billion in 2019
The commercial and industrial machinery and equipment rental and leasing industry generated $12.6 billion in operating revenue in 2019, up 2.2% from 2018. Operating expenses totalled $11.3 billion in 2019, an increase of 4.0% from 2018. With growth in operating expenses outpacing growth in operating revenue, the operating profit margin fell from 12.1% in 2018 to 10.5% in 2019. The increase in expenses was largely driven by a 4.5% increase in salaries, wages, commissions and benefits, which continued to represent the largest share of total operating expenses.
Households and the Environment: Radon awareness and testing, 2019
Radon is a naturally-occurring colourless, odourless, tasteless gas that tends to accumulate in basements and crawlspaces. After smoking, it is the second-leading cause of lung cancer in Canada. In 2019, 54% of Canadian households reported that they had heard of radon, up from 49% in 2017. Of these, 63% were able to identify the correct description of radon when asked to pick from a list of possibilities, while 18% chose an incorrect description, down from 28% in 2017. The remainder had only heard of the term.
Quarterly capital spending: Oil and gas industries, third quarter 2020
Following a 52% drop in the second quarter, capital expenditures in the oil and gas extraction industries increased 11% to $4.5 billion in the third quarter. Year-to-date spending totalled $17.1 billion, a 34% decline over the first three quarters of 2019.
Canadian Community Health Survey: Rapid Response, January to March 2020
Two new data sets from the rapid response component of the Canadian Community Health Survey – Annual Component are now available. The first rapid response data are on the topic of ‘healthy living’ and the second on ‘smoking stages of change and tobacco alternatives and vaping.’
