Retail trade, October 2022
Retail sales increased 1.4% to $62.0 billion in October. Sales were up in 6 out of 11 subsectors, representing 84.4% of retail trade. The increase was led by higher sales at gasoline stations (+6.8%) and food and beverage stores (+2.2%).
Monthly credit aggregates, October 2022
In October, the total credit liabilities of households (including mortgage and non-mortgage loan debt) increased $9.8 billion (+0.4%) to reach $2,805.2 billion. Real estate secured debt, composed of both mortgage debt and home equity lines of credit, rose $7.7 billion (+0.3%) to reach $2,252.2 billion.
Monthly estimates of business openings and closures, September 2022
In September, the business opening rate (4.4%) contracted for the second consecutive month to settle below its 2015-to-2019 historical average of 4.7%. On the other hand, the business closure rate (4.9%) increased for the third straight month and was 0.3 percentage points above its historical average. Business closures increased slightly or held relatively steady in all industries.
Urban public transit, October 2022
In October, ridership on Canada’s urban transit networks continued to grow, reaching 117.3 million trips and recovering more than two-thirds (69.3%) of its level in October 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic.
Food services and drinking places, October 2022
On a seasonally adjusted basis, sales in the food services and drinking places subsector increased 1.5% to $7.4 billion in October 2022 as Canadians continued to feed pent-up demand for dining out. Higher sales were reported in limited-service restaurants (+1.6%), full-service restaurants (+1.3%), special food services (+2.7%) and drinking places (+0.6%).
Outlook of rural businesses, fourth quarter 2022
Inflation continues to be a top concern for rural businesses across Canada, as over 6 in 10 (62.4%) reported that it remained an obstacle in the fourth quarter of 2022. Despite this, the proportion of rural businesses reporting a positive outlook increased since the beginning of the year.
