Retail trade, January 2017
Retail sales rose 2.2% to $46.0 billion in January, led by four subsectors that rebounded from lower sales in December. Excluding sales at motor vehicle and parts dealers, retail sales advanced 1.7%.
Human Activity and the Environment: Freshwater in Canada, 1971 to 2013
According to a new study in Human Activity and the Environment, the annual water yield—an estimate of Canada’s supply of renewable freshwater—averaged 3,478 km3 from 1971 to 2013. This yield represents, on average, 104,000 m3 of water for every single Canadian, about the amount flowing over Niagara Falls every minute.
Investment in new housing construction, January 2017
Total spending on new housing construction increased 8.7% year over year to $4.0 billion in January. Six provinces posted increases, led by Ontario and British Columbia. Nationally, investment increased for every dwelling type.
Sound recording and music publishing, 2015
The Canadian sound recording and music publishing industry experienced a 3.0% decrease in its combined total operating revenues, from $880.0 million in 2013 to $853.9 million in 2015. This was accompanied by a 6.6% decrease in total operating expenses, from $789.3 million to $736.9 million over the same two-year period, resulting in a 3.4 percentage point increase in operating profit margin, from 10.3% in 2013 to 13.7% in 2015.
Aboriginal seniors in population centres in Canada, 2012
The Aboriginal population is a young population, with proportionally more children and youth and relatively few seniors. There is a demographic shift, however, towards aging among Aboriginal peoples. According to the 2001 Census and the 2011 National Household Survey, the number of Aboriginal people 65 years and over more than doubled from 2001 to 2011 to 82,690.
