In the first quarter of 2021, Canadian corporations reported an increase of 18.1% (+$15.4 billion) in net income before taxes, to $100.7 billion.
Study: Gendered impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the proportion of youth neither in employment nor education at the start of the school year
Amid the COVID-19 pandemic and changing pandemic restrictions, youth had to make difficult decisions in the fall of 2020. A new study shows that, at the start of the 2020/2021 school year, when faced with unprecedented youth unemployment, young women aged 17 to 24 responded by enrolling in postsecondary institutions at a higher rate than a year earlier.
Monthly Survey of Manufacturing: Flash estimate, April 2021
Given the rapidly evolving economic situation, Statistics Canada is providing an advance estimate of sales in the manufacturing sector for April. Advance results indicate that manufacturing sales fell 1.1% in April. The decline mostly reflects lower sales in the transportation equipment industry.
Food services and drinking places, March 2021
On a seasonally adjusted basis, sales in the food services and drinking places subsector rose 9.8% to $4.9 billion in March compared with February. Sales rose at full-service restaurants (+15.8%), limited-service eating places (+6.0%), special food services (+6.9%) and drinking places (+15.3%). Each province reported higher sales, with Ontario (+14.1%) posting the largest increase. Quebec (+8.5%) and Alberta (+10.3%) also reported large gains.
Dairy statistics, March 2021
The total amount of milk sold off farms in March declined 0.1% year over year to 800 145 kilolitres. Meanwhile, milk sold off farms for fluid purposes decreased 3.7% to 239 647 kilolitres. Milk sold off farms for industrial purposes rose 1.5% year over year to 560 497 kilolitres.
Oilseed crushing statistics, April 2021
Oilseed processors crushed 901 911 tonnes of canola in April. Oil production totalled 391 000 tonnes, while meal production totalled 516 474 tonnes.
Milled wheat and wheat flour produced, April 2021
Millers milled 250 922 tonnes of wheat in April, while wheat flour production totalled 188 633 tonnes.
