Canadian Income Survey, 2024
The median after-tax income of Canadian families and unattached individuals was $75,500 in 2024, relatively unchanged from 2023, after adjusting for inflation. Similarly, the 2024 poverty rate for Canada remained relatively stable, at 11.0%, compared with the previous year (11.1%).
Foreign direct investment, 2025
Canada’s net direct investment position with the rest of the world reached $828.4 billion at the end of 2025, down $37.1 billion from 2024. Growth of foreign direct investment in Canada outpaced the growth of Canadian direct investment abroad for the first time since 2022.
Energy statistics, February 2026
Primary energy production rose 5.2% year over year in February, with natural gas (+9.0%) and crude oil and equivalent products (+5.8%) contributing the most to the increase. Secondary energy production (+0.0%) was essentially flat, with gains from refined petroleum products being largely offset by coke.
Recontact with police among child and youth victims of violent crime, 2010 to 2024
The majority of child and youth victims of police-reported violent crime had subsequent contact with police, either as a victim of violent crime or as a person accused of any type of crime, or both. Of the 59,636 child and youth victims of violent crime in 2010, nearly 6 in 10 (58%) had at least one subsequent contact with police by the end of 2024.
Monthly estimates of business openings and closures, January 2026
In January, the business closure rate edged up 0.1 percentage points to 5.0%, after settling at 4.9% over the previous three months. The closure rate was 0.4 percentage points above its 2015-to-2019 historical average in January. The opening rate held steady at 4.9% for a second consecutive month, remaining at 0.2 percentage points above its historical average. In January 2026, both the entry (1.6%) and the reopening (3.3%) rates were unchanged from the previous month. The business opening rate was relatively unchanged from December 2025 to January 2026 across all sectors.
Entry and exit data for the calculation of international migration statistics
The report titled “Exploring the use of Canada Border Services Agency’s Entry and Exit Data for Demographics Estimates” is now available. This report documents the progress made in using this new data source to refine the measurement of certain components of demographics growth within the Demographic Estimates Program (DEP).
