Canadian international merchandise trade, February 2021
Canada’s merchandise exports decreased by 2.7% in February, while imports fell 2.4%. As a result, Canada’s merchandise trade surplus with the world narrowed from $1.2 billion in January to $1.0 billion in February.
Survey on Early Learning and Child Care Arrangements, 2020
According to new results from the 2020 Survey on Early Learning and Child Care Arrangements, just over half (52%) of Canadian children younger than 6 were in regulated or unregulated child care from November 2020 to January 2021, down from 60% in 2019.
Canadian international trade in services, February 2021
Canada’s monthly international trade-in-services balance went from a deficit of $236 million in January to a surplus of $79 million in February, led by a higher travel services surplus. Overall, imports of services declined 4.9% to $9.1 billion, and exports were down 1.6% to $9.1 billion. The international trade-in-services balance has been in a surplus position for most of the months since April 2020. Prior to then, there had not been a monthly surplus since the beginning of the series in January 2007.
Energy statistics, January 2021
January saw the continuation of an upward trend for production in some energy sectors and rising energy prices. Production of crude oil and equivalent products increased year over year for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic, while renewable energy generation (including hydro, wind and solar energy) and coal production were also up. In contrast, natural gas, electricity and refinery production declined.
