Consumer Price Index, January 2021

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 1.0% on a year-over-year basis in January, up from a 0.7% increase in December. On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, the CPI rose 0.4% in January.

Retail sales increase in 2019, due to higher prices

In 2019, retail customers spent $670.6 billion at Canadian store and non-store retailers, leading to a modest growth (+2.5%) in operating revenue for the retail trade industry over 2018. This increase was largely attributable to higher prices.

Trends in the Canadian mortgage market: Before and during COVID-19

Mortgage borrowing reached record highs in 2020, with households adding nearly $108 billion in mortgage debt, compared with less than two-thirds of that amount in 2019 and just under $46 billion in 2018. Despite the economic upheaval caused by the pandemic, expected credit losses on mortgage loans remained slight, accounting for 0.1% of mortgage debt as a share of total household mortgage debt in the third quarter.

Understanding financial vulnerabilities goes beyond the traditional entities where oversight and risk assessment are well established. Because of the many interlinkages between non-bank financial intermediaries and other financial institutions and the important role they play in the financial system, it is necessary to better measure their activities to more comprehensively monitor risk.
