Canada’s international investment position, first quarter 2019
Canada’s net foreign asset position was up by $86.7 billion in the first quarter, to $696.1 billion. This increase mainly reflected higher equity prices and was moderated by the appreciation of the Canadian dollar against all major foreign currencies.
Study: The effect of changing Canada–United States border costs on North American trade patterns and expenditures
In spite of agreements to reduce their impact, non-tariff barriers to Canada–US trade remain substantial. A new Statistics Canada study finds that these administrative burdens and differences in product standards and regulations, among other factors, impose the equivalent of a 30% tariff on the flow of goods across the border. By contrast, provincial borders are estimated to impose the equivalent of a 10% tariff. The recent signing of the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement makes understanding how trade flows respond to changes in border costs all the more important.
Family matters: Being separated or divorced and aged 55 or older
Canada’s population is aging, but Canadians are staying healthy and active much later in life than ever before. While most Canadians aged 55 and older are in a couple relationship, some are also separating, divorcing and starting new relationships later in life.
Households and the Environment Survey, 2017
In some jurisdictions across Canada, there are restrictions on the types of hazardous wastes that households are allowed to dispose of in their regular garbage, because they may contain materials that are detrimental to the environment. To address this, hazardous waste disposal programs have been established to help Canadians dispose of these kinds of products.
