Canada’s international investment position, fourth quarter 2018

Canada’s net foreign asset position decreased by $109.1 billion to $528.6 billion in the fourth quarter, after reaching a record high $637.7 billion at the end of the third quarter. The decline mainly reflected the weaker performance of foreign stock markets relative to the Canadian stock market.

The market value of assets held by Canadian trusteed pension funds edged down 0.7% in the third quarter, to just under $1.9 trillion. On a year-over-year basis, the market value of assets grew 7.3% compared with the third quarter of 2017.
