COVID-19 impacts on productivity growth and gender differences in employment
Two new articles released in Economic and Social Reports explore the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on different aspects of the economy. One looks at labour productivity, which recorded its second-highest increase since 1981, and the other looks at how COVID-19-related disruptions to the labour market have been more severe for women.
Farm income, 2020
Realized net income for Canadian farmers rose 84.2% to $9.9 billion in 2020, as strong growth in receipts outpaced slightly higher expenses. This increase followed a 10.5% gain in 2019 and a 32.7% decline in 2018. Excluding cannabis, realized net income was up 71.9% to $9.5 billion.
Farm cash receipts, first quarter 2021
Farm cash receipts for Canadian farmers totalled $19.8 billion in the first quarter, up $2.7 billion (+15.5%) from the same quarter in 2020. Crops (+23.4%), livestock (+4.5%) and program payment (+14.6%) receipts were all up from the same quarter a year earlier.
National Travel Survey, fourth quarter 2020
Canadians took fewer trips both within Canada and abroad (-50.9%) in the fourth quarter of 2020, compared with the same quarter in 2019. Because of this, tourism spending was down 70.1% year over year. This fourth quarter decline was mostly driven by less travel within Canada, as domestic trips in Canada dropped by 28 million.

Canadian manufacturers produced 1.5 billion cigarettes in April, down 20.4% from March 2021. Cigarette production was 9.0% higher compared with April 2020.
