Press Release
Farm income, 2020 (revised data)
Realized net income for Canadian farmers rose 84.4% to $9.4 billion in 2020, as strong growth in receipts outpaced slightly higher expenses. Excluding cannabis, realized net income was up 73.9% to $9.6 billion.
Farm cash receipts, January to September 2021
Farm cash receipts for Canadian farmers totalled $58.0 billion over the first three quarters of 2021, up 11.0% (+$5.8 billion) from the same period in 2020 as a result of higher receipts for livestock and crops driven primarily by increases in prices and high demand. Direct payments remained unchanged, at $2.4 billion.
Aquaculture, 2020
Sales of aquaculture products and services were down 16.8% from 2019 to $1.1 billion in 2020. The decline was mainly because of lower national prices for finfish products and lower production levels for both finfish and shellfish.
Prior to COVID-19, international students accounted for the growth in postsecondary enrolments and graduates
In the 2019/2020 academic year, just prior to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, student enrolments in Canadian public universities and colleges rose for the fifth consecutive academic year to almost 2.2 million. The increase was largely driven by higher enrolments of international students, a trend that has been ongoing for the last decade. See “International students accounted for all of the growth in postsecondary enrolments in 2018/2019.”
