Building permits, August 2018

Canadian municipalities issued $8.1 billion worth of building permits in August, up 0.4% from July. Strength in the non-residential sector drove the increase, while the residential sector declined for the third consecutive month.

Provincial and territorial tourism satellite account, 2014

Tourism activity varied noticeably across provinces and territories in 2014, with its contribution to gross domestic product (GDP) ranging from 1.2% in Nunavut to 3.0% in Prince Edward Island. Nationally, tourists spent $84.1 billion in Canada, contributing to 1.9% (or $35.0 billion) of GDP.

Access by Canadians to regulated liquor and cannabis retail outlets, fourth quarter 2018

The retailing system for liquor products is tightly regulated in Canada and starting October 17, a similar system will be put in place for cannabis products as well. However, while the liquor retailing system is well established and has existed for many decades, the one for cannabis is new and will require years to fully develop. As of August 2018, there were 2,895 liquor stores in Canada, while early information from the provincial regulatory authorities indicates there may be 288 cannabis retail outlets open for business in the fourth quarter. There will be many more cannabis stores opened in subsequent quarters.
