Provisional death counts and excess mortality, January to August 2020
In early 2020, COVID-19 began spreading across Canada, impacting communities and families throughout the country. During the first wave of the pandemic—from March to June—there were more than 7,000 excess deaths across Canada. Although the total number of weekly deaths returned to ranges that would be expected had there not been a pandemic by July, the number of deaths attributable to COVID-19 began to trend upward again in early fall. The number of cases reported by the Public Health Agency of Canada for the first 10 days of October alone (244 deaths) was higher than the monthly totals reported in August (191) and September (171).
Monthly estimates of business openings and closures, July 2020
The July estimates of business openings and closures show that, with the continued easing of COVID-19 restrictions, there was a large decrease in business closures. In July 2020, 36,513 business closures were observed in the Canadian business sector, 33.9% less than what was observed in June. This number of business closures in July is comparable with levels observed prior to the pandemic and 6.7% lower than the pre-COVID level observed in February 2020. By comparison, there was a slight decrease in the number of business openings of 3.3% from June to July. However, openings in July surpassed closures in the same month.
Recent developments in the Canadian economy, 2020: COVID-19, fourth edition

By July, real gross domestic product was 6% below pre-COVID-19 levels, supported by strong rebounds in manufacturing, construction and retail trade in late spring.
Railway carloadings, August 2020
The economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic continues to dampen the volume of cargo carried by rail. In August, Canadian railways carried 29.0 million tonnes of freight, down 14.7% from August 2019. This was the fifth consecutive monthly decline and the biggest year-over-year drop since March.
